22 Motorsport News Round-up 2002

Rallye Sunseeker

2002 started with our 2nd year of support for the safety crews on the Bournemouth based first round of the ANCRO championship, Rallye Sunseeker. With the event long established as a spectator favourite, being the only national gravel rally in the south, safety is paramount for crews and public alike on the winter event.

Backing from 22 Motorsport ensured that the Chief Medical Officer, seven doctors, the safety radio network, two St. John's Ambulance units, 14 rescue units, 8 safety officers, the course safety car and Dorset Police force were all provided for.

22 Motorsport HQ

On March 4th 2002 we moved in to our larger, purpose built home, 22 HQ. Our Banbury based latest technology unit was officially opened on the 27th in glorious sunshine, with a party that started before lunch and continued through till the fireworks after dark!

Cambrian Rally: Mikko Hirvonen

22 year old Finn Mikko Hirvonen contested the Dee Jays Cambrian Rally as a warm up for the Network Q Rally GB.

Using our S6 WRC Impreza, freshly rebuilt from Irish tarmac championship glory, Hirvonen took an eight second lead after just 6 stage miles, stamping his intentions on the event immediately. Testing suspension and diff settings as the event moved into the classic Welsh sections of Clocaenog and Pennant, Mikko and co-driver Miikka Antila dropped back slightly from Andrew Burton in his Peugeot Cosworth.

But a mistake from Burton on the penultimate stage, Penmachno North, handed the victor's spoils to the 22 Motorsport crew. Burton spun his Peugeot, took too long to restart the engine and Mikko took the lead. No problems on the final stage and the young Finn took his first victory on UK soil.

"Its good to win a rally outright over here and I think we've learned a lot about the car for Rally GB. Driving in the rain and mud today is sure to be a big advantage when I get to south Wales."
